Year Six Sports Leaders - #leadersofthefuture

Yesterday, Mr Finlayson from Hunts School Sports Partnership came to run our first ever play leaders training!

Despite the cold weather, sixteen children from Year Six were very excited to begin seven weeks worth of training to become a play/sports leader.

Each of these leaders will become an ambassador to promote physical activity at our school. They were thrilled and extremely grateful to be given some free gifts to help them along the way, especially their new play leaders hats and bags!

This week, they learnt the first principle of SPACE! Children showed huge enthusiasm and provided some great answers for discussion. The cold did not put them off and they all managed to deliver a fantastic warm up activity. They learnt how to provide feedback to each other and discussed how their activity could be differentiated to make it harder or easier!

We can't wait to see them continue to develop as leaders each week!

B Team Football Tournament

Today, Crosshall hosted the Hunts District Primary Schools FA Group C, B Team Tournament. The visiting teams were Winhills, Middlefield, Huntingdon and Buckden.

The Crosshall Team was made up of a mixture of Year Fives and Sixes; Aston D, Joshua B, Ewan B, Ryan G, Alex A, Will G, Willow B (GK), Barney C, Kye F, Charlie B and Daniel B.

The team put up a great performance to finish third.

Crosshall 02 Winhills
Our first match was against Winhills. We kicked off the match and fought hard against the skills of Winhills. Unfortunately, they were a little too strong for us.

Crosshall 10 Buckden
The second match was against Buckden. We had several attempts on their goal and eventually Aston broke through to score the only goal of the match.

Crosshall 00 Middefield
Our third match was against Middlefield. This was a tough, but equally matched, game with both teams having many attempts on goal, but nobody could break the deadlock.

Crosshall 00 Huntingdon
Our fourth and final match was against Huntingdon. Again, this was another close match with both teams having several attempts at goal but none were successful.

The team displayed the Crosshall Values during the whole tournament and played fantastically.

Quad Kids Level 3

Today, 10 Year Five & Six pupils went to the St Ivo Outdoor Centre to take part in the Living Sport Level 3 Quad Kids County Championships. We were part of a team with Brampton representing Huntingdonshire. Due to the Year Six pupils being away on their residential, we took a mixed team from the three teams that attended the Level 2 competition, two weeks ago.

Our team consisted of Megan C, Morgan C, Francesca H, Tina A, Freya C, George P, Matthew P, Elliott B, Ryan B and Alfie B. They wore their bright pink Huntingdonshire T shirts with pride.

We started with an opening ceremony with dance performances, speeches and a mass participation warm up. There was a guest appearance from sporting champion Jade Windley. Jade is a former professional tennis player, who represented Great Britain and played at Wimbledon. We finished the ceremony with a reading of the ‘Spirit of the Games’: Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief and Teamwork. We then moved to the track to start the competition.

The team split into 8 groups, with athletes from the other 4 districts (Peterborough, Cambridge, Cambs. South and Witchford) and rotated round the 4 events: 75m sprint, 600m, standing long jump and howler throw.

Everybody worked extremely hard in the heat and maintained the ‘Spirit of the Games’ throughout the day with many performances worthy of being performance of the day.

There are 2 performances that stand out though. Freya in her 600m. Freya was in a constant battle with 2 other girls until 200m to go when they dropped 1 girl, with 100m to go Freya started to pull away, the other girl started to pull back, but, with lots of support from her team mates Freya pulled away to win by about 2m. The other performance that stood out was at the end of the day when Megan threw 24m in the howler.

We are extremely pleased with how these athletes stepped up to the challenge of the day and represented Crosshall Junior and Huntingdonshire in the Spirit of the Games.

A, B & C Team Netball

Today, Mrs. Gould, Mrs. Farrugia, Mrs. Parween and Miss Howell took a group of nineteen Year Five and Six students to compete in a netball tournament at Longsands.

Our A, B and C teams competed against teams from nine other local schools.

The tournament was very successful and the organisation was superb. Across all of the teams there was a high level of skill shown and a real sense of enjoyment in playing the game.

Our pupils represented Crosshall in the best possible way; taking part with a good mix of competitive spirit, fairness, sportsmanship and ultimately having lots of fun.

Each of our teams had some successes in their matches and played in the play-offs at the end of the evening.

The A team were particularly successful, winning each of their first-round matches with impressive score lines and then drawing with Roundhouse A team in the 1st place play-off. As a result, we were delighted to come away with a joint first place award and a chance to share the trophy.
We would like to thank and congratulate all of the pupils who took part and also thank you to the parents who came to support their children.

Level Three School Games Gymnastics Final

Today, six children from across the school represented Huntingdonshire schools in the Level Three School Games Gymnastics Final held at Huntingdon Gymnasium. After their success at the Level Two Competition, securing a top two finish out of twenty one teams, Crosshall gymnasts were keen to practise ahead of the final and put in hours of work at home and at school.

Children attended an opening ceremony at St. Ives Indoor Centre and were able to be a part of celebrating the School Games Competition with other schools from across the county. Children heard a motivational speech from Henni Goya, English professional golfer, who spoke about her top tips for performing at your best and about her work as a Sky News presenter.

After the opening ceremony, competitors were dispersed to their locations to compete. Crosshall Junior School children, representing Huntingdonshire schools, turned up in high spirits in their bright pink School Games t-shirts. The children were nervous, but excited to perform against ten other schools

Holly, Alice and Sid demonstrated their floor routine excellently and displayed tremendous sportsmanship throughout. Jessica, Kasia and Sophia competed in the body management routine competition with outstanding gymnastic technique and determination. All children participated in performing a vault for the judges, to which they were commended on their performances. The competition was extremely competitive with all children performing at an extremely high level.

After all rotations had been completed, children were encouraged to participate in some fun games. While waiting, we were able to interview Henni Goya about her successes and ask her some very important questions. She was a great School Games ambassador and even gave us her signature!

Children had a final surprise as Louis Smith turned up to train at the gym. At the end of the competition, Louis Smith kindly allowed the children to take photographs with him and ask a few questions. All of our competitors were in awe of meeting an Olympic gymnast!

The team finished in 7th place and were excited to receive their certificates. Miss Howell and Mrs Flowers would like to praise the children on their behaviour and outstanding efforts throughout.

The children had an invaluable experience in performing in such a fantastic facility and had the opportunity to meet some influential athletes too! Sophia said, "I am really grateful for the opportunity to perform this routine. We have worked so hard to learn in front of so many people."  Holly excitedly said, "I will never forget this experience!"

We would like to thank staff, parents and carers for their support. The competition provided children with many new skills and a chance to demonstrate the School Games' core values. We are looking forward to competing again next year!

Multi Sports Festival

Today, Bella, Aydin, Oscar, Lucas and Skye went to the St Ives Sports Centre to take part in a Multi Sports Festival hosted by the Huntingdon School Sports Partnership.

We started off playing Krazy Cones. This is where 4 coloured cones light up in sequence, you have to remember the sequence and re-light the lights. We then moved onto archery and all the children enjoyed being Robin Hood. We then played New Age Curling. This is similar to traditional curling, except the stones are on wheels instead of ice. All managed to gain brilliant scores. Then came Boccia, which is like bowls, but with soft balls. Next was Crazy Catch. This produced lots of laughter as the balls bounced off the nets as some funny angles. Oscar set the record of the day with 45 catches in 1 minute. We then played a target throwing game where several children managed to equal the highest available score of 72. Our final game was table cricket. This is played on a table tennis table with walls marked with numbers and ‘fielders’. The ball is bowled down a ramp and hit with a small cricket bat. If you hit a ‘fielder’ you are ‘caught out’, if you hit a number (2,4, or 6) you score that many runs. Lucas showed fantastic leadership during this helping some of the other children with their batting technique.

We then finished the morning off with a presentation where the children received a medal each. All the children had a fantastic morning showing some great sportsmanship and team work.
